Sometimes, for me, the thought of having any sort of impact on the world seems like such a daunting task. I often feel as though I am way too small, too irrelevant and too powerless to really make a difference of any kind. The enemy also lies to us by telling us that we are not worthy. Satan has tried to use my past sins to make me feel as though I am unworthy. He has tried to paint a scarlet letter on me and use it against me in every way possible, but scripture tells me otherwise. Jacob was a cheater, Peter had a temper, Paul was a murderer, David had an affair, and yet God used every single one of them. God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.
Your existence alone has already altered the history of the world. Every single one of us will undoubtedly leave a mark on the lives of those around us and those that come after us, whether purposeful or incidental. Lives will be forever changed just because you lived. What really matters is what kind of an impact you will have. Will your life be one that inspires others? Will your actions help spread the gospel and fill others with the love and hope of Jesus?
I find myself looking up to some of the better-known Christian evangelists and feeling like I could never make the same impact that they have. They speak so eloquently and so boldly and with so much faith, fire and passion that I cannot help but feel embarrassed to think that I could have any sort of impact at all. The truth, however, is that God uses ordinary people all the time to do extraordinary things. We tend to lack two things, though: faith and boldness. Lack of faith that God can use us to make an impact on the world and lack of boldness to even try.
At the Passion Conference, I heard a story that really had an impact on me. In China, they have thousands of Christians working hard to spread the gospel in the underground church. Although it is illegal and extremely dangerous, their faith is so incredibly bold that they are determined to stand up for what they believe and do everything they can to make an impact on the world. They trust in the Lord at all costs, and their faith is unshakable. Unfortunately, they are often murdered for their works, yet that does not stop them from witnessing to their executioners on the way to their execution. That’s the kind of faith we should have. Faith so bold that the possibility of embarrassment, failure, persecution or even death won’t stop us from spreading the gospel.
It’s stories like this that light a fire in me and give me the burning desire to do whatever I can with my days on this earth to make Jesus famous, to live my life in such a way that others can’t help but desire to know more about my God. It doesn’t matter what your past looks like. We have all of the tools necessary to make an impact and grow the kingdom. All it takes is faith the size of a mustard seed.
So, whether you are called to work in the mission field or called to work here at home, the mission is still the same. Love others, love Jesus and make him famous. Use the life you’ve been given to glorify him in all that you do, and you will make an impact. Be a world changer.
